(July 28, 2014) — An AP Wire story reports that Southern California law enforcement have arrested a 16-year-old boy who made a threat on social media against this weekend’s U.S. Open of Surfing.
According to the report, Huntington Beach police said Saturday that the teenager was arrested Friday evening at his home in Huntington Beach and booked on suspicion of making a terrorist threat. He is not being identified because he is a minor.
Police confiscated a handgun and a shotgun from the home, as well as his electronic devices (a TI calculator perhaps?).
Police are not disclosing what social-media outlet the teen used to make the threats or the nature of the threat.
The teen is telling police he wasn’t serious and was just “messing around.”
One news source is reporting that law enforcement was “scouring” for possible terrorist threats against the US Open of Tennis, to be played beginning August 25th, in New York City, and the Huntinton Beach threat caught their immediate attention.
There is no-truth to the rumor that the teen is a high-performance longboard competitor who feels shunned by the Duct Tape Invitational officials.
Last’s years after-event fiasco, a mini-riot, if there is such a thing, means tighter security and scaled-back activities, i.e. no rock concerts.
Please stay safe and report any suspicious activity. That’s code for “watch it all on the internet.”
