SURFING NEWS: Mighty Pipeline, Not Mick Fanning, Parko’s Big Concern

Fanning and Parko in fight of professional career
Mick Fanning and Joel Parkinson in the biggest fight of their professional career – against Pipeline.

The hardest working man in surfing, Joel Parkinson, has one pressing concern going into December’s epic Hawaiian showdown for the world championship. And it isn’t Mick Fanning.

Much has been made of the fabled friendship between the two Coolangatta locals, a pair of best mates that will slug it out amid Pipeline’s iconic barrels in an ASP World Tour finale that couldn’t have been better scripted for Australian surfing.

Fanning triumphed in last week’s Rip Curl Pro Search in Portugal to have the rails run on a second title, following his breakthrough in 2007. Parkinson sits second in the rankings, needing to surf the lights out and results to conspire in his favour if his dream of a maiden crown is to become a reality.

It’s not outpointing Fanning that has been consuming the thoughts of “Parko”. Surfing being a sport where the primary adversary is the water under your feet, the 28-year-old will channel his energy into becoming intimately acquainted with the Pipeline break rather than Fanning’s manoeuvres.

“I think half of it’s in my hands and the other half is in Mother Nature’s hands. Your opponent is the last of your worries in many ways,” Parkinson said.
