Trestles Hurley Pro
JJF was the best surfer at Teahuppo and Trestles but came up short at each
Jordy overscored on the last wave? I didn’t see any glaring bias or unfairness on the heat analyzer.
JJF looks awkward- David Price sent an email – Elaine dancing on Seinfeld episode; kicks and thumbs like a full body dry heave set to music.
Kelly – looked solid and then at times out of sync as were all the contestants as the condition is and jumbled large swell created a bit of havoc.
Kelly needs a win.
Gabe is villainous = Carlos Munoz paddle hassle, or no, just good competition? Either way he looked like Lance Burkhart hassling Rick Kane in the movie North Shore- which would make Carlos’ coach, Jim Hogan, the legendary Chandler.
GERR V POTTZ – a let down; almost embarrassed for potts; gerr surfed smooth; next up?
Not sure you can materialize a good one;
might be barton lynch v ? Damien hardman
Jeremy flores looks lost
I didn’t watch too much of Women’s surfing – but Steph’s final performance was incredible — she looked like Parko.
Dane Reynolds in France ; if he fails ; should sponsors give up on him as a wildcard? At what point does it get to a place where you say, “ya he shreds, but not in my contest. Waste”
JORDY HAT GATE … LACKEY-GATE
Jordan Smith’s thrilling win at Trestles quickly turned sour as Beach Grit’s own weeping mascot got fined a massive 50k for wearing his Red Bull cap on the podium.
The ASP (soon WSL) has a deal with Monster Energy that prohibits the wearing of Red Bull caps on the podium.
This could not be independently verified because the ASP rulebook for 2014 “was not found” on its website.
Red Bull, on the other hand, has a deal with its athletes requiring them to wear Red Bull branded headgear at all times and especially on podiums.
The ASP subsequently fined him $50K.
Many North Americans have homes timeshares or simply cherish Cabo as a destination
and this Cat 3 hurricane slammed Cabo San Lucas and most of Baja Sur and devastated the area;
not getting a lot of press ;
but I’m hearing worse than we think;
looting, home robberies, gangs roaming;
people are desparate for food, water, electricity, gas, ; no one spared;
I think western media is slow to discuss this story
Fear of more tourist dollars leaving if we hear about the atrocities;
no one wants to go till it settles down.
Could be three months at least until they are ready to service tourists.
Surf perspective the hurricane did produce a rarely seen perfect sand right coming off of the iconic Lands End rocks at Cabo proper – video
SURFBOARDS I’M RIDING
5’9” John Belik quad with XTR foam from Javier in Oceanside ; boards probably 5 years old; love it. Dying though.
5’10” Hynson Twinzer; another old flame; not mine; borrowing it; I have 35 surfboards and I’m borrowing boards; sick;
9’4” Wayne Rich longboard ; masterful nose-riding machine
5’10” Christenson contemporary thruster with a wider squash tail;
6’10” round board shaped by Rob Machado; widow maker set up
Top 5 Surf Destinations to Roll the Dice
Baja Sur – roads washed out; lots of desperate people; empty waves
West Africa – Ebola break out; empty waves
Southern Cal – warm water with good run of swells has waves & crowds at all time highs
Philippines – been getting hammered with tropical storms cyclones
Through the Surface
My friend Clint works at Scripps Institiution of Oceanography in La Jolla
Clinton Edwards and Clifford Kapono from the Scripps Instituition of Oceanography and UCSD, are proposing a one-year project to visually map (think Google Earth) the health of the coral reefs under the world’s most famous waves. This project was sent to the National Geographic, and their video submission, “Through the Surface” competed with over 700 other projects before being chosen as one of the Top 10 finalists for the Expedition Granted contest.
It is now up to the public, whose votes will determine if they will get the funds and resources to make this expedition happen.
He is competing for a $50K Nat Geo grant
He needs your vote for his Coral Reef Systems project
He proposes to visit 6 of the worlds most famous waves that break over coral (Pipe / Teahupo’o / P-Pass / Cloudbreak / Padang-Padang / TBD: Central Pacific), and once there we will use our photo-mosaic technology to produce large scale high-resolution images of the reef (thousand of meters squared).
These pictures will provide surfers and non-surfer communities a digestible and exciting interactive interface to explore the reefs under their favorite waves. These images have crazy detail and are truly beautiful.
Its like Google Earth for surfers (not quite that scale, but still plenty big!!).
This is not a funded surf trip, rather we will travel to these locations precisely when there are no waves in order that we can conduct our image acquisition and chemical field work.
He needs your vote today and EVERYDAY !! You can vote once every single day!
