I’ve been listening since the “in the lineup” days and haven’t missed an episode.
I like some of your ideas about the ASP, I have a couple of ideas of my own. Keep the two tiers and for WCT events –
Each event consists of the top 15 surfers from the previous year, next 10 surfers from the qualifying tour at the time, with the rest of the spots filled by any previous winners of the event, the top two from the junior world tour and then sponsors/ASP wildcards, trials winners and in Hawaii locals. equaling 32.
If there are too many surfers then run a quick extra round for everyone other than the top 25.
My reasoning. The gap between the top 15 or 20 and the next run, even 10 to 15 is a big gap. There are too many people on the tour who never get out of round three.
At those iconic events like Pipe or Bells or Fiji most people would rather watch Machado or Sunny Garcia or Occy than the bottom rungs of the WCT. People will say do you really want a 40 + Tom Carroll at Pipe ? but I would prefer him to some slop groveller from the QS.
Golf and tennis basically allow this type of thing and it is a huge draw card. You’re not going to get PT coming back but who wouldn’t want to see Slater at selected events for years to come or the Hopgood’s in Fiji for another five years, regardless of whether they are retired or fall out of the ratings ?
What do you guys think ? Dave Western Oz.

Some good ideas DaveO; Ten current QS surfers slide into the event. That changes rather consistently. adds new blood. The legendary pros thing… hmmm, not so sure. I like the idea of past winners being invited if they’re in top surfing form. Machodo could certainly make a run at PIPE again. There is sort of small list of guys that are worthy. They have to be under 45 years old. to be a serious contender. One problem is that past champions are getting old quickly and Kelly Slater is the only big draw of old guys and he’s still on tour. When he retires there will need to be an open slot invite for him at most events I think? He’s a bona fide “reason to watch”. Who else, under 45, would you be excited to watch at say Teahupoo or Lowers or Pipe? Machado, Dorian, ?? Who else?? At JBay… Occy? He’s too old? Next year would it be T KNox? or ????

The swell hype? The fact is that the forecasters for Surfline and for Solspot live in OC. Do they hype the living shiite out of it? Do they get paid to hype it? They get paid to be optimistic. And frankly, it is six-feet up in Orange County…bigger in some places. But not in the majority of SD county. If it wasn’t for the NW windswell, it would have bee 1′-3′ yesterday, at least south of Carlsbad.

My experience with the dawn patrol yesterday.
