MUST SEE MOMENT
Stormtroopers surfed the spectacular Severn Bore.
There was an unworldly sight in the Forest of Dean this morning (Friday 27th November) when a trio of Star Wars Stormtroopers surfed the spectacular Severn Bore. Key scenes from the upcoming Star Wars episode VII were filmed in nearby Puzzlewood and can be seen several times in the trailer. Swapping the Death Star for surfboards, the elite soldiers of the Galactic Empire took to the waves to mark the release of the highly anticipated new Star Wars film and a new TV & Movie Trail. The Forest of Dean’s atmospheric and picturesque location provided a natural stage for the film, which director J.J Abrams referenced in a thank you letter to all of the movie’s cast and crew.
KOOK OR DUKE?
KOOK: People who use drugs. Pot, cocaine, meth, molly ; you are creating the demand for the drug cartels. Some blood is on your hands. But hey, keep partying into poverty.
DUKE: Prince Harry in South Africa in part supporting the young people involved in the Surfers Not Street Children project on Durban beach, which empowers former street children as they move towards adulthood.
SURFAID DROPS IN ON BIG STICK, SANTA CRUZ
Get your stoke on in Santa Cruz and support the surfer’s charity of choice, humanitarian aid agency, SurfAid. On Saturday April 23, 2016, SurfAid will be hosted by the Big Stick Surfing Association (BSSA) in Santa Cruz to run a SurfAid Cup event as part of the annual Logjam! surf contest.
The SurfAid Cup is a tag-team format surf competition. Each team of 4 is required to raise a minimum of $5,000 for SurfAid. While all teams get to pick a pro or local legend surfer, the team that raises the most money gets the first pick of pro surfer to join as their 5th team member. Past pros include Tom Curren, Donavon Frankenreiter, Joel Tudor, and Strider Wasilewski. Trophies are awarded to winning surfers and the winning fundraisers.
“SurfAid is thrilled to be partnering with BSSA for this event. Not only will it be an incredible chance to surf the fantastic break at Santa Cruz, but an opportunity to save some lives as well.” Says Karl Luber, board chair of SurfAid US.
Started 16 years ago by a group of intrepid surfers, SurfAid’s programs have grown to four areas in Indonesia. With strong support from the likes of Billabong, the sports action industry and many other generous individuals and foundations, SurfAid provides life saving work to some of the most remote and impoverished villages – all near to places surfers love to go.
In Nias, Indonesia, SurfAid has helped to reduce maternal deaths from eight annually to zero in just 28 months. Their programs work with communities on simple things like washing hands, safe delivery practices, sleeping under a mosquito net, exclusive breastfeeding, and improved nutrition; all of which have an enormously positive impact on the health of women and their families
